When it comes to bolstering a home's value, having nicely finsihed wood floors goes a long way to keeping up a property. Here's how to refinish wood floors in a day.

When it comes to beautifying the home, a quick fix is refinishing old wood floors. In just a few hours, old, tired, scratched up floors can be turned into beautiful lush surfaces. The trick is to make sure that none of the scratches have run too deep. For that, planks may need to be replaced. Here are the steps to refinish tired wood floors in just an afternoon.

Things You’ll Need

  • Hardwood floor cleaner
  • Towel mop or towel wrapped around the mop head
  • 160 to 200 grit sandpaper
  • Buffer
  • Buffing pad
  • Dust mask
  • Vacuum
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Stain
  • Stain brush
  • Stand-up roller

Refinishing the Floor

  1. Remove all furniture from the room inclusive of rugs and anything touching the floor.
  2. Place a generous amount of hardwood floor cleaner on the wood floor.
  3. Mop and clean the entire surface of the wood floor.
  4. Sand the edges of the room. Much like edging occurs in painting, practice the same principal and edge out the room utilizing the sandpaper. Avoid using a sanding block as they may be sand some uneven surfaces. Check the sandpaper often to ensure that it is not wearing thin.
  5. Buff the entire room utilizing a buffer. Be sure to utilize a buffing pad that is meant for sanding purposes. Sand with the grain and be sure to wear a dust mask.
  6. Leave the room and grab a cold beverage. Give the dust a good twenty minutes to settle in the room before re-entering.
  7. Vacuum the entire room. Utilizing a vacuum that has hose capabilities will be easier when vacuuming the corners.
  8. Using the mop stick, dry tack the floor using a microfiber cloth to remove the rest of the dust and debris.
  9. Stain the edges of the surface. In the same manner that the initial sanding was done along the edges of the wood floor surface, stain the edges of the room using a stain brush.
  10. Pour a small amount of stain onto the hardwood floor along the grain.
  11. Spread the stain using the roller. Remember to work with the grain and to stain small sections at a time to avoid differences in color. While staining, overlap each stroke so that the stain remains even.
  12. Grab another cold drink and wait three to five hours before returning furniture and fixtures to the room.

Tips

  • If there is no hardwood floor cleaning solution available, create a cleaning solution by combining eight parts water to one part vinegar.

  • Placing a couple of fans on “low” will expedite the drying process. Just be sure that the fans are not sitting on the newly stained floor, or pointing directly down onto the drying surface.
